LMC Response to NHS England's Wasteful Drug Use Action Plan
Date published: 31/07/2017
We would like to highlight to prescribing clinicians in the practice that GPs have a contractual obligation to prescribe medication on an FP10 that the GP feels is clinically necessary whether the medication is available over the counter or not.
While we support the premise of saving precious NHS resources and promoting self-care, we cannot support any suggestion of action which would lead to GPs being in breach of their contractual obligations. We believe that any changes in medications which can or cannot be prescribed by primary care need to be nationally co-ordinated.
