Job Purpose:
To lead the prescription team in ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely processing of repeat and acute prescriptions. The Lead Prescription Clerk will act as the main point of contact for prescription-related queries, liaise with clinical staff, and ensure compliance with prescribing protocols and best practice.
Key Responsibilities:
Prescription Management:
Process repeat and acute prescription requests in line with practice protocols.
Ensure prescriptions are clinically appropriate and flagged for review when necessary.
Monitor and manage prescription queries from patients, pharmacies, and clinicians.
Leadership & Coordination:
Supervise and support other prescription clerks.
Allocate daily tasks and ensure workload is managed efficiently.
Provide training and induction for new team members.
Clinical Liaison:
Work closely with GPs, pharmacists, and nursing staff to resolve prescription issues.
Attend clinical meetings when required to discuss prescribing trends or concerns.
Quality & Safety:
Ensure compliance with prescribing guidelines and medication safety alerts.
Support audits and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
Maintain accurate records and contribute to data collection for PCN reporting.
Patient Communication:
Handle patient queries professionally and sensitively.
Promote electronic repeat prescription services and online access.
System Management:
Use EMIS Web to manage prescriptions.
Ensure medication reviews and alerts are actioned appropriately.
Person Specification:
Essential:
Previous experience working in a GP surgery or healthcare setting as a prescription clerk.
Strong understanding of repeat prescribing processes.
Excellent communication and organisational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proficient in using clinical systems (e.g., EMIS Web).
Attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
Desirable:
Experience supervising or training staff.
Knowledge of prescribing protocols and medication safety.
Familiarity with PCN working and collaborative care models.
