Report on Kent LMC General Practice Survey 2025

Kent LMC surveyed our constituents over 5 weeks across June and July 2025. Kent Local Medical Committee’s 2025 General Practice Survey highlights that general practice is a system under unsustainable pressure. Responses from 230 GPs, practice managers, and wider practice staff indicates unanimous support for the independent contractor model but reveal the combined pressures of workforce attrition, financial instability, inadequate estates, unreliable IT, and fragmented system working. These issues are already constraining patient access, eroding continuity and quality of care, and threatening the sustainability of the independent contractor model.

The findings provide a critical local context for ambitions of the Government’s 10-year health plan, published in July 2025. While the plan sets out intentions for digital transformation, neighbourhood teams, and a shift of care out of hospitals and into the community, the reality in Kent & Medway is that general practice cannot deliver this without urgent systemic investment and reform.

General practice in Kent & Medway is willing and able to play a central role in delivering the ambitions of the 10-year health plan. However, this survey makes clear that the current trajectory is unsustainable. To succeed, the plan must start with rebuilding and securing general practice as the cornerstone of the NHS.

Without urgent and predictable investment in workforce, estates, IT, and funding into and value ascribed to locally commissioned services, patient care will continue to suffer, inequalities will widen, and the independent contractor model will be at risk.
